LANCY HOUSING GENEVA

The Lancy housing project consists of two residential buildings developed on the same site: one designed for private ownership and the other dedicated to social housing, conceived with higher-than-usual quality standards. Located in a neighborhood undergoing gradual densification, the project seeks to introduce collective housing that maintains a domestic scale and strong connection to outdoor space.Rather than treating the two buildings as separate entities, the project approaches them as a coherent residential ensemble, where shared spatial principles and landscape elements create a unified identity while accommodating different housing models

Architecture
The project reinterprets the conventional housing typology by reorganizing access and circulation. Instead of enclosed interior corridors, all apartments are accessed from the exterior through winter gardens. Residents reach their units either by elevator or by a staircase positioned at the ends of a long external gallery. This sequence transforms the experience of entering the apartment. Rather than passing through anonymous internal corridors, residents first encounter a semi-exterior space and garden atmosphere, before entering the interior of their homes. The intention is to evoke the feeling of approaching a house rather than an apartment. The winter gardens also function as intermediate climatic spaces, improving comfort while extending the living area toward the outside. In addition, the project challenges the conventional distribution of residential programs. Functions typically relegated to the basement—such as shared spaces and services—are relocated to the ground floor, where they open directly onto the surrounding gardens. This strategy activates the ground level, strengthens the relationship between the buildings and the landscape, and creates a more lively and communal interface with the outdoor environment.
