central mosque of prishtina

The architecture of the mosque draws from tradition through reinterpretation. Elements such as the dome, minaret, and portico, deeply embedded in the collective memory of Islamic architecture, are redefined and assembled in a contemporary composition. The project seeks to create a mosque that reflects Kosovo’s particular relationship with religion—respectful of tradition while confidently oriented toward the future. Beyond a place of prayer, the mosque is conceived as a space for gathering, dialogue, and community life.

Urban Strategy
The site occupies a major urban intersection, where an east–west boulevard meets a north–south pedestrian axis connecting several neighborhoods of Prishtina. The project reinforces this strategic point through the creation of a large open terrace-court, inspired by the traditional Hayat. This civic space acts as an urban attractor and accommodates large gatherings during religious celebrations. An underground parking structure mitigates the impact of large visitor flows

Architecture
The complex is organized into three main components: the mosque (prayer hall), the open Hayat court, and a multifunctional centre. To maximize public space, the prayer hall is elevated above ground level, allowing the generous Hayat terrace to function as a transitional space between the city and the sacred interior. The circular prayer hall, covered by a 55-meter dome rising 39 meters above the boulevard, forms the spiritual core of the project. Natural light from above reinforces the contemplative atmosphere, while surrounding spaces—entrance hall, library, and smaller prayer rooms—ensure acoustic and spatial calm. The multifunctional base accommodates community programs including conference spaces, educational facilities, administration, and commercial areas organized independently from the mosque.

Materiality
The building is conceived in red concrete, inspired by Mughal architecture yet expressed in a contemporary form. The interior of the prayer hall contrasts with a white dome and red carpets, creating a calm and luminous spiritual space. A double-skin envelope and zoned heating system ensure high energy efficiency, while materials are sourced locally.
