DIDA HOUSE
Dida holiday house is located in Sharr Mountains, about 20 km from Prizren. The Dida family was looking for a vacation home to gather their entire large family. The house was to serve as a mountain retreat. The climate of Prizren is extreme. Summer is hot and winter is very cold. The ideal model was a summer house and a winter house. That’s why we imagined a house that in a way is double. The outdoor house, open but partially covered, is the summer house. While the winter house is covered, heated but constantly in relation to the “outside house”. The project is generated and developed from the central idea that the interior and exterior of the house should stimulate each other, and act as a platform to enjoy nature. All the spaces of the house are designed around the central void in three levels, which connect vertically and diagonally each part of the house.
Architecture
The house is located on a large plot between the road Prizren-Prevalla and Lumbardhi river. At the insistence of the owners it occupies the East-North corner, opening to the South and West. The plot has a pronounced slope at the beginning, from the road smoothing down in the direction of Lumbardhi. Therefore the main access to the house is with a bridge from the road, to the second, sleeping level. Then the stairs brings you down to the lower level. The house has an independent space under the ground floor, in the semi-basement, along with technical rooms. The bedrooms are at the entrance level from the street, while the living room with kitchen are a level under, together with technical rooms. The partially covered courtyard connects both inside and outside with all levels of the house. The house has a reinforced concrete structure, leaving all the structural elements in the exposed concrete while the siding and other walls are painted with white lime. Thus the house expresses the truth of its construction, for nothing has been concealed. The house is in full relation with the surrounding landscape. It contrasts human effort with nature. It functions as a platform for observing and enjoying the nature. Although modern at first glance, the Dida house was born from the centuries-old architectural wisdom of Prizren. Its inspiration comes from the content and not from the formality. Integration of architecture in the environment, effective protection from natural elements, acting as a platform for observing and enjoying nature, and finally the simplicity and truth of expression. Thus the central element of the house is space. It vibrates in harmony with itself and nature.
